How Date Addition and Subtraction Works
Date arithmetic is different from simply converting everything into 365-day years. A month can contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, and leap years add an extra day to February. The calculator therefore applies calendar units first and day-based units afterward.
Result date = starting date ± calendar years/months ± weeks × 7 ± days
For example, adding 3 months to January 15 means moving to April 15. Adding 3 months to a date near the end of a short month can require a calendar adjustment because the target month may not contain the original day number.
Why Months Cannot Simply Be Converted to Days
A common mistake is to assume that every month has 30 days. That shortcut works only for rough estimates. Calendar calculations need the actual month structure because April has 30 days, May has 31, February has 28 in a common year, and February has 29 in a leap year.
Leap Years and Date Calculations
Leap years matter whenever a date calculation crosses February 29. In the Gregorian calendar, a year is generally a leap year when it is divisible by 4, except century years that are not divisible by 400. That calendar rule prevents long-term drift in the relationship between the calendar and the solar year.
