How Is GPA Calculated?
GPA is calculated by multiplying the grade points for each course by its credit hours, adding those values together, and dividing the result by the total number of credit hours.
GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
For example, suppose you have three courses:
- A in a 3-credit course
- B in a 3-credit course
- A in a 3-credit course
On a 4.0 scale, an A is worth 4.0 grade points and a B is worth 3.0 grade points.
The calculation is:
(4.0 × 3 + 3.0 × 3 + 4.0 × 3) ÷ 9 = 3.67
The resulting GPA is 3.67.
GPA and Credit Hours
Credit hours determine how much each course contributes to your GPA. A course worth four credits has more influence on your GPA than a course worth one credit.
This is why simply averaging the numerical grade values may produce a different result from a credit-weighted GPA calculation.
4.0 GPA Scale
This calculator uses a standard 4.0 GPA scale with commonly used letter-grade values.
- A+ = 4.0
- A = 4.0
- A- = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3
- B = 3.0
- B- = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3
- C = 2.0
- C- = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3
- D = 1.0
- D- = 0.7
- F = 0.0
Schools and colleges may use different grading policies, including different values for A+ grades, weighted courses, or other grading systems. Check your institution's grading policy if you need an official GPA calculation.
