How to Calculate Your Grade

To calculate a percentage grade, divide the points you earned by the total points possible and multiply the result by 100.

Percentage = (points earned ÷ points possible) × 100

Grade Calculator Example

Suppose you earned 85 points on an assignment worth 100 points.

The percentage is:

(85 ÷ 100) × 100 = 85%

Using the grading scale used by this calculator, an 85% corresponds to a B.

Common Letter Grade Scale

This calculator uses the following percentage ranges:

Grading scales can vary between schools, teachers, colleges, and courses. If your institution uses a different scale, use its official grading policy when interpreting your result.

Points-Based Grades

Points-based grading is common for assignments, quizzes, exams, and projects. The number of points possible can vary for each assessment.

For example, if you score 45 points out of 50:

(45 ÷ 50) × 100 = 90%

Your percentage grade would therefore be 90%.

What If I Know My Percentage?

If you already know your percentage, you can use the letter-grade ranges above to determine the corresponding letter grade under this calculator's scale.

For calculating your overall grade when you have multiple assignments with different weights, a weighted grade calculation may be more appropriate.

Grade vs. GPA

A grade represents your performance on an assignment, test, course, or other assessment. GPA, or grade point average, combines course grades into an overall average using a grading-point system.
