How to Calculate a Percentage Grade

To calculate a percentage grade, divide the number of points earned by the total number of points possible, then multiply the result by 100.

Percentage = (Points Earned ÷ Points Possible) × 100

Percentage Grade Example

Suppose you earned 85 points on a test worth 100 points.

The calculation is:

(85 ÷ 100) × 100 = 85%

Using the grading scale on this calculator, an 85% score corresponds to a B.

What If the Total Points Are Different?

The total number of points does not have to be 100. The same formula works for any number of points.

For example, if you earned 42 points out of 50:

(42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%

So your percentage grade would be 84%.

Percentage Grade Letter Scale

This calculator uses the following grading scale:

Your school or instructor may use a different grading scale, so check your course syllabus when determining your official letter grade.

Percentage Grade vs. Letter Grade

A percentage grade represents your performance as a number from 0% to 100%. A letter grade converts that percentage into a category such as A, B, C, D, or F.

For example, an 85% score is a percentage grade, while B is the corresponding letter grade under this calculator's grading scale.
