EDUCATION CALCULATOR

Weighted GPA Calculator

Calculate your weighted GPA and unweighted GPA using your course grades, credits, and the bonus points used by your school for Honors, AP, IB, or other advanced courses.

Enter your courses

Enter each course, grade, credits, and the bonus points your school uses for weighted classes.

Common U.S. weighting: Regular = +0.0, Honors = +0.5, AP/IB = +1.0. Schools use different weighting policies, so enter the bonus used by your school.

Bonus pointsUse 0 for regular courses. A common setup is +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, but your school may use a different scale.

Important: Weighted GPA scales are not standardized. Your school may use different grade points, course bonuses, credit rules, or a maximum GPA. This calculator uses the values you enter and should be compared with your school's official grading policy.

What Is a Weighted GPA?

A weighted GPA gives additional grade points to courses that are considered more challenging, such as Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or other advanced classes. Unlike an unweighted GPA, which normally uses the base grade points without course bonuses, a weighted GPA can be higher than 4.0 depending on the grading scale.

How Does a Weighted GPA Calculator Work?

This calculator starts with the base grade points for each course, adds the bonus points you enter, multiplies the weighted grade points by the course credits, and divides the total quality points by the total credits.

Weighted GPA = Σ[(Grade Points + Bonus) × Credits] ÷ Total Credits

Weighted GPA vs. Unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA does not add extra points for advanced courses. A weighted GPA can add bonus points for courses such as Honors or AP classes. For example, if a school adds 1.0 point for an AP course, an A worth 4.0 base points may count as 5.0 weighted points for that course.

How to Calculate Weighted GPA

To calculate a weighted GPA, enter the grade, credit value, and weighting bonus for each course. Multiply the resulting weighted grade points by the course credits, add those quality points together, and divide by the total number of credits.

Weighted GPA Example

Suppose you have four one-credit courses: an A in a regular class with a 0.0 bonus, an A- in an AP class with a 1.0 bonus, a B+ in an Honors class with a 0.5 bonus, and an A in a regular class.

Using the grade points and bonuses entered in the calculator, the weighted GPA is calculated from the total weighted quality points divided by the four total credits.

What Is a Good Weighted GPA?

There is no single weighted GPA scale used by every school. Some schools cap weighted GPA values, while others allow grades above 4.0 for advanced courses. Because of these differences, a weighted GPA should be interpreted using your school's official grading policy rather than compared directly with a different school's scale.

What Bonus Should I Use for Honors or AP Classes?

A common U.S. approach is to add 0.5 points for Honors courses and 1.0 point for AP or IB courses. However, this is not a universal rule. Some schools use different bonuses or different grade-point scales, so check your school's grading policy and enter the actual bonus used by your school.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my weighted GPA?

Enter each course's grade, credits, and weighting bonus. The calculator adds the bonus to the base grade points, weights each course by its credits, and divides the total by the total credits.

Can my weighted GPA be higher than 4.0?

Yes. If your school adds bonus points for advanced courses, your weighted GPA can exceed 4.0. The maximum depends on your school's grading scale.

Is a weighted GPA the same as a GPA?

Not necessarily. A standard unweighted GPA usually does not give extra points for advanced courses, while a weighted GPA includes course bonuses according to the school's weighting policy.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

The main difference is whether advanced courses receive extra grade points. An unweighted GPA uses the base grade points, while a weighted GPA can include additional points for course difficulty.

Does every school use the same weighted GPA scale?

No. Schools can use different grade-point values, course bonuses, credit systems, and GPA caps. Always check your school's official grading policy when reporting your GPA.
